Things I was doing instead of blogging: GeekGirlCon 2011

From February 2011 to February 2012, I worked as the Special Events Assistant with GeekGirlCon.

GeekGirlCon is an all-volunteer organization “dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the contribution of women in all aspects of geek culture.” As Special Events Assistant, I helped to plan and organize geeky events throughout the year with the intention of building the local Geeky Girl community, raising awareness for GGC, and sometimes to raise funds for the big con in October.

The con itself was a blast. A sleep-deprived blast, but a blast nonetheless. My highlight was probably Whedonesque Burlesque on Saturday night. If that sounds like something that might be up your alley, they are having another show this August. Tickets are sold out, I believe, but you never know. Sometimes miracles happen.

Unfortunately, I had to step back from my staff position once I accepted a full time job at Microsoft in late July. The GGC group is certainly an eclectic mix of personalities and all sorts of different geeky tastes, but it did serve to broaden my horizons and to allow me to forge some new friendships. Plus, I am included on a lot more geeky FB invites and that always makes me happy. I may not always want to drive into Seattle, but every once in a while there is an event that is worth that hassle.

For now, I am greatly looking forward to GGC 2012 in mid-August. I am excited to see how it will have grown over the past year and also to see what it will be like going as a plain, old attendee instead of a staff member with a million things to do.

To be fair, she is rather skinny and that is a lot of yarn.

There are a lot of quotes on Pinterest attributed to “Unknown”. I have a theory that “unknown” is actually a single person who is conducting an experiment on how many inane and nonsensical quotes they can get onto the “Popular” category before anyone notices that they don’t make any sense.

The attendance at Jenny’s parties was dwindling due in no small part to her tendency to treat her guests like children.

Fell better about yourself now? That’s nice. Because this is totally funny and clever and completely not something an asshole pins.

Seriously, Pinterest has more ass-pinching and boob-squishing than a girls sorority house on a Saturday night.
